Writes & Rambles

Hey guys, I (nearly) finished my new website!  The meat of the thing is all there, but there are some remaining blog entries I need to write so my home page will propagate all the image blocks.  I was really surprised to find that I have an actual portfolio now that reflects work with which I am happy and not embarrassed to show to new clients.  Some of my better pieces are mysteriously missing (probably on some external drive still buried in a moving box), but I’m pretty OK with what’s available. My work isn’t going to set any trends or win any awards, but it’s professional, at least.  A day after I finished it, I even got picked up for part-time overflow work by a local printer.

You know, because I need some extra work to fill all that spare time I have.   Continue reading

Hiatus + Another Move

Another FTW has come and gone. I did write my short story, but won’t be posting it at this time.  After quite a few pages (I won’t ever post anything longer than five pages here on the blog) I had a startling realization, which is that, unbeknownst to me, I have begun to flesh out a Universe I didn’t know existed.  The ties between all the stories I’ve tried to write in the past are there, clear as day to me now, though the plot of the greater tale has not made itself apparent to me.  Anyway, some small bits of unrelated stories are beginning to take shape and I’ll just have to keep writing my characters until the story appears.

Invisible Kathy Bates

Hobbit-Monkey summit was going swimmingly up until last night, when, after a brisk hike at Walnut Creek, I demanded a visit to Barton Springs for late-night free swim.  We were waiting in the dark for the gates to open when I misstepped, tumbled down a short set of uneven, limestone steps and crack!  crunch! and crack! -ed both of my ankles.  One is clearly the sprained.  The other, I think, is also sprained, though Tyson seems to think I could have torn or broken something.  I’ve broken enough bones in my life to know what that feels like, and I think not. Commencing Bean Dumpage in 3….2….

Yes, it’s official.  The secret is out:  we’re moving back to LA, that tart of a temptress, that flip-your-fortune-on-a-dime of a town.  She pulls me back, she always does, even when I solemnly vow to never come back.

I’m experiencing a moment of complete and utter surreality.

When you have a dream, the kind of dream that depends largely on other people’s diligence and willingness to back, the kind that needs a combination of hard work,  and blind faith and no small measure of great luck and good timing, and that dream is handed back to you with a simple, “OK – take it, you earned it,” it’s not something you can articulate elegantly.  It stops you dead in your tracks.  That one moment erases every moment you spent thinking, “I can’t do this any more.  I am not this person and I don’t know if I’ll ever break through.”  It takes away the pain of a hundred nights looking at a dwindling bank account and wondering if that special thing you thought you had was maybe just a delusion.  It washes away the despair of feeling worthless and wondering why no one loves the thing you do as much as you love the thing you do. FTW – Week 2

If you haven’t seen the original post about Fun-Time Writersizing, you may see the rules here.

Week 2

I did not have company in last week’s endeavor, so hopefully one of you will join in the fun this week.  Until then, I’ll continue trying to convince you to play with me using my poorly and hastily written stories as bait.  Is it working?  See below for this week’s words.  Stories are due Sunday!  Enjoy.  🙂
